In the Victorian era Tortoiseshell was used in mourning jewellery. When somebody passed away as a sign of respect black clothing and jewellery were observed. Piece of tortoiseshell piqué is tortoiseshell inlaid with silver and gold. The shell is heated and the design is pressed into the piece. Mourning jewellery became fashionable after Prince Albert passed away due to Queen Victoria taking on mourning for the rest of her life.
